Crew Change

Editors note: For those who don't know, the crew from New Zealand to the Med, Paul and Morag, jumped ship in the Seychelles. After a week of day tripping (sightseeing that is) they announced that they were leaving and would not return. This development caused stressful moments because the CHRISTIANNE had planned to depart Seychelles in less than a week. It seems the departure was planned some time in advance and some warning would have made replacement a more orderly task.  Fortunately, intrepid and enthusiastic sailors, Drake Lundell and John Layton, dropped everything and flew within the week to join the effort. Their presence and willingness has been a bright spot on this very difficult leg.

Captains note-In his own words: While I was upset about the crew change at first, especially since it was pre planned and kept a secret, I am so pleased now because we had so many more challenging conditions and the new crew is happy sailing the boat as it was designed to go. Also, no longer did I have to be concerned about every word that may offend a hypersensitive ego. The constant lying to convey the answer wanted rather than sharing the actual navigation facts and the responsibility for decisions. Now there are no more little mind games, competition to try and show superiority and moody silent treatments, a very welcome relief.  It was too bad since they were good sailors and considering the length and close quarters of the trip, good companions.  They did have some concern over their safety for the remainder of the trip due to the reports of piracy but this was known from the start.  It was also unfortunate that while they missed the roughest and most dangerous sailing portion they also missed the most interesting and exciting portion as well.
